Things to see and do in the Virgin Islands

Sun and Beaches in St. Thomas (and there are lots of them!)

Magen’s Bay

Magen's Bay beach is a "must do" because it is rated one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.  The beach is a mile across and It’s the best beach on the island for swimming, sunning and just hanging out. Don't go there to snorkel or find shells, it's just nice sand with amazing water (It is very clean and usually has no waves at all).  They have their own snack bar (burgers, onion rings, pizza, sodas ect.) and a boutique which carries a ton of name brand bathing suits, tees and tanks. There are picnic tables, trees with shade, changing rooms, bathrooms and showers too, basically everything you need for your day at the beach. Magen's is a great place to walk for exercise in the morning (because it’s long and flat) and if you get there before 8ish, you don't have to pay. A lot of locals walk the beach in the early morning or power walk in the ocean.  If there are lots of cruise ships in town, then it will be busy but it doesn't matter, there is plenty of space for everyone. Watch for sea turtles in the water here. Magen's has plenty of parking right at the sand if you are driving. There are hiking trails that are marked and maintained by the Nature Conservancy. There is a small entrance fee here. www.magensbayvi.com

Smith Bay Park

This beach was recently purchased by the Virgin Islands Government. Smith Bay park is located on the East End of the island towards Redhook. Currently there is a dirt road leading to the beach (don't let that scare you) and it is now open for all to enjoy from 8am-5pm. There is a $2 entrance fee to get in (which goes for the life guards, grounds keepers and soon to be amenities).  There are no food vendor’s here  yet so bring your own snacks and drinks. There are port-a-potties, picnic tables and lifeguards. This beach area is a work in progress (new parking spaces and amenities) and you will soon be able to enjoy concessions. It’s a beautiful beach to spend the day at and the good thing is, not many folks to share it with. The color of the water is amazing too!

Morningstar Beach

Located at the Marriott’s Morning star hotel at Frenchman’s Reef hotel. Since it’s the main beach for the hotel, you will find lots of hotel guests there. They do offer kayaks, sailboats, jet skis and paddleboats. Chairs, umbrellas along with snorkel gear and floaties are available to rent as well. The surf can get rough here so it’s not so great for snorkeling but for sunning and the beach, it’s perfect. They do have a main beach restaurant called Coco Joe’s with breakfast, lunch and dinner served daily as well as a bar. There is also a beach gift shop with clothing, bathing suits, candles, lotions and tees. www.Marriott.com.

Coki Beach

You will see Coki beach advertised everywhere as the best snorkeling and it is great, but the beach is very small and if it’s a weekend, watch out, it’s full, really full of locals so it get's crowded. Sapphire beach is great for snorkeling as well and it is right next door.  I would choose that over Coki plus it’s much easier to get there and has tons of parking vs. Coki. If you do go to Coki beach, park at the Coral World parking lot or in front of the bar/snorkel shack and walk to the beach. Parking is also at a premium here too. Coral World is right next door. There are also plenty of eating places here on the beach and chairs for rent as well.

Sapphire Beach

This is a great place to hang out and a beautiful place to snorkel. There is a restaurant (The Grapevine) on property that does service the beach and they will deliver beer, soda and lunch to your lounge chair.  Look for the menu on the wall in the lobby. Sapphire has a beach boutique too and the dive shop is open as well (snorkel and chair rentals here). This is a fairly large beach with nice, Caribbean sand. www.antillesresorts.com

Secret Harbor Beach

This palm lined beach is located at St. Thomas’ East End. While it’s not a huge beach, it’s a perfect, calm beach for sunning and relaxing. It has become known for excellent snorkeling and nice sunsets too. There is a dive shop that rents chairs, water sports and snorkel equipment. There is a beach bar and full restaurant on property as well. You may see a wedding or two on the beach here. They have colorful iguanas that will come to visit you on the beach. www.secretharborvi.com

Sun & Beaches in St. John:

Trunk Bay

This is the most popular beach on St. John and located on the North Shore, off route 20. It has an underwater snorkeling trail that has plaques on the bottom of the ocean, telling you about the coral formations and the fish that you may see while you are down there. They have snorkel equipment to rent as well as showers, restrooms and a little restaurant/concession stand are on the beach. There is a $4 admission. It is a $7 cab ride each way from the Cruz Bay ferry terminal.

Cinnamon Bay

This beach is the one of the longest beaches in the St. John's national parks system, at almost a mile. It’s located on the North Shore, off route 20. While there isn’t a snorkel trail like Trunk Bay has, there is great snorkeling to the right of the beach if you don’t mind a little swim. They do have water sports rentals, restrooms and showers and a food concession stand too. There is a camp ground at this beach that is available to stay at, kind of a rustic island vacation. This beach has everything that Trunk Bay does minus a ton of people, so if you aren’t into cruise ship crowds, go here instead.

Francis, Maho and Leinster Bays

This set of beaches is beautiful and has great sea life. They are located on the North Shore, off route 20. Endangered sea turtles nest at Francis and Maho. Extra large starfish can be seen on the underwater route from the Leinster Bay shoreline to Waterlemon Cay so it’s the perfect place to snorkel and see the underwater sites. To get there park your car at Annaberg Plantation and take an easy 15 min walk. Francis bay has picnic tables, BBQ pits and outhouses. If you are at Linster Bay early morning you might just see Donkeys on the beach.

Activities to do in St. Thomas:

Golf at Mahogany Run

This is a George and Tom Fazio designed course with the three world renowned signature holes, #’s 13, 14 and 15th that make up the “Devil’s Triangle” which are perched along cliffs above the Caribbean sea. This 6,022-yard, par-70 course, offers 18 of the most beautiful holes in the Caribbean. There is a great Grille room to eat at after you are done playing golf with open-air and air conditioned dining available. Club rentals and apparel also available at the Pro Shop. www.mahoganyrungolf.com

Coral World Ocean Park

If you like aquariums then go to Coral World attached to Coki beach. It is small (5% the size of a state-side Sea World) but it's something to do and does have charm. They do have coupons in back of the tourist books for $3 off. If you have small kids (they will LOVE it), I think it would be good to take them there because they have a petting place with stingrays and activites for them. For adults, they have an underwater snuba tour where you walk on the bottom of the ocean floor with a helmet on. If you are a snorkeler and not a diver, you will love this! A fairly new attraction is swimming with the sea lions and its fabulous and a MUST DO. They are the most friendly, playful things and cooler than swimming with the dolphins that everyone else does in Tortola. www.coralworldvi.com

This sprawling estate is set upon eleven acres one thousand feet above Hull Bay and World Famous Magens Bay. A large outdoor observation deck has fabulous views offering unique photo opportunities (don't forget the camera here!). The main house highlights classic open Caribbean architecture featuring native handcrafted stonework and displays of local artisans and artists. St. Thomas Synagogue

It was built in 1833 after the original structure was destroyed by a fire in 1796. This synagogue is the oldest in continuous use under the American flag. It is a small synagogue and the floors inside are covered with sand in memory of Jews during the Spanish Inquisition, who gathered in secrecy in cellars to worship and dusted the floors with sand to muffle the sound. They have a small but extensive gift shop full of Judaica merchandise. They are open for visitors M-F 9am-4pm, except holidays. It’s a steep, short walk from the heart of town. Shopping in St. Thomas (and YES, it’s fabulous, and duty free (NO TAX)!)

Sure, the island has pristine beaches and splendid resorts but if you have a lust for shopping, you have come to the right place. St. Thomas has the best duty-free shopping in the Caribbean. Silver, gold, perfume, watches, cameras, sunglasses, diamonds, emerald, sapphires, semi-precious stones, luxury clothing and purses, shoes, liquor, crystal, china and linen….it just doesn’t end with what you can find here. Prices tend to be 20% to 40% lower and up to 60% lower for liquor and cigarettes too.

Most of the retail shops are found in downtown Charlotte Amalie, a historic Danish town with cute winding alley ways, brick archways and palm lined walkways. Modern retailers are in three hundred year old warehouses that once stored rum and spices and now have been turned into stores selling luxury items. You can find such retailers as Diamond’s International, Jewels, Little Switzerland, Cardow, Royal Caribbean, AH Riise (official Rolex dealer), Boolchand’s, Dynasty Dazzlers, Fresh Produce, and Tanzanite International. Tradewind’s Shop located on the waterfront is always a good bet with gifts for everyone including Larimer jewelry, hook bracelets, copper art, clay and handmade pottery, wind chimes, tropical wraps and purses, comfortable sandals and nautical and tropical art too. You can take care of everyone on your list in this one shop. www.thetradewindsshop.com

Visit a great coffee shop like Bean’s and Bytes and get your morning brew, Belgium chocolate shop for a mid day chocolate pick me up, and restaurants like Glady’s for lunch. Be sure to go down the cute little alleyway like Drakes Passage and visit the shops in Royal Dane Mall such as “Just Imagine” that carries locally handmade products from the Caribbean (fabulous shop with friendly, helpful staff), Hibiscus alley and A. H Riise Mall too. Grab a map at the Visitors booth because even though it’s small, it can get confusing with so many shops to choose from. Get off the main streets to the cute alleyways; that is where more unique shops are vs. all the jewelery shops

Since there are a lot of cruise ships that can be in town at once, it can get quite busy, but that is all part of the fun. If you are at a hotel, ask the front desk to tell you a day that there are less cruise ships in town and go that day if crowds aren’t your thing. Plus, the stores will have more time to spend with you.

Shops are generally open at 9am-5pm, Monday through Saturday and some do open on Sundays too.

Note: Duty free allowance is double the $800 limit from other islands. Each U.S. resident, including children, can take home $1600 worth of duty free goods bought in the US Virgin Islands. You may be required to fill out a separate customs form for these items when you return to the US. Keep your receipts because you will be asked to show them. You are also able to take 6 bottles of liquor back as long as just one of the bottles is a product made in the Virgin Islands such as our Cruzan Rum. With so many flavors to choose from, one won’t be enough though.

American Yacht Harbor

Located in the East End, this is a cute little shopping area is surrounded by small and large boats. Dolphin Dreams is a nice gift and home décor shop that has just about everything. www.dolphindreamsvi.com. There is a silver shop too called Elizabeth Jane’s. (www.igy-americanyachtharbor.com)

Havensight Mall

Located right at the cruise ship dock, this is a convenient, smaller mall that has all of the major retailers that downtown does, yet, there are far less people to contend with. There are over 70 stores to choose from including Caribbean Surf Co., a full service surf shop (also has 2 other locations, one downtown and one in Redhook as well), The Draughting Shaft (gifts, home décor, art and office supplies) and Southern Exposure, a fabulous T-shirt and tank top shop. There is also a nice book store called Dockside bookshop. There is a pharmacy, eateries like the Delly Deck and The Great Wall Chinese food, 2 major banks (if you run out of money), a cigar and smoke shop, boutiques and tourist stores. Prices are the same here as downtown too. www.havensightmall.com

Yacht Haven Grande

Right next door to Havensight Port of Sale mall is the new Mega Yacht Marina called Yacht Haven Grande with luxury boutiques and restaurants. You will be able to see all the mega yachts from the back of Havensight where the cruise ships pull in and you can just walk there via the backside of Wendy’s or the back walkway from Havensight. It has a nice walking deck along the harbor through the shops and nice benches to sit on (for the husbands). If you are driving by, it doesn’t look like much, but trust me, it’s NICE (all the views and stores are facing the water). So far there are about 40 stores open including, Louise Vuitton, Coach, Bulgari, Gucci, Salvatore Ferregamo, Tommy Hilfiger, Black and White Market, BCBG clothing, BEBE, How Bout’ Your Pet boutique (www.howboutyourpet.com), Aqua Beachwear, Kool Kids, Bella Vera boutique, VI brewery, Sunglass hut and Solstice Sunglass boutique. There are 8 high end jewelry stores such as Bulgari, Diamonds International and Roberto Coin. Be sure to try a Bad Ass Coffee (from Kona). There is a walkway that will take you all the way thru to town along the waterfront (how perfect is that? More shopping!). There is a First Bank ATM here when you run out of shopping money too. www.yachthavengrande.com

Paradise Point

To get to this shopping area, 700 feet above town, overlooking historic Charlotte Amalie, you either have to drive up (short, windy and steep 3 min car ride) in your rental car or take the tram (entrance is across from Havensight shopping mall). It’s worth the trip just for the views if nothing else. There are shops here such as The Pirates Chest that specializes in authentic treasure coins (most locals who wear these around their neck have bought them there), shirts, souvenirs, artwork and pottery. There are other tourist type stores as well on two levels. It’s small but has a beachy restaurant there as well as an exotic bird show, sky bungee jump and great views of the cruise ships in the harbor. www.stthomasskyride.com

St. John shopping:

Yes, St. John has fabulous beaches but the shopping is just as good too. In St. John, you will find a very large selection of unique gifts such as handcrafted art, jewelry, home décor and clothing. There are far less big designer national-chain type stores in St. John than St. Thomas.

Mongoose Junction

This stone and mahogany shopping complex is a must do while in St. John and only a 5 minute walk from the ferry dock. You will find upscale boutiques and brands of clothing, handbags, and sunglasses to casual beach wear and children's clothing, plus home decorations designed by local and Caribbean artisans. Visit such stores as Caravan Gallery (always voted a locals favorite!) which carries unique jewelry from St. John and around the world, as well as sterling and larimar. This is where Kenny Chesney bought his signature hook bracelet. It’s upstairs (look for the wind chimes outside their door). (www.caravangallery.com). Bamboula is a nice boutique in the heart of the center featuring clothing, primitive art, locally made jewelry and accessories, shoes and just all around fun, interesting things. (www.bamboulastjohn.com) or try Bougainvillea for upscale resort wear for men and women. Big Planet is a BIG store (3 stories) of every name brand you can think of in surf and beach clothing and shoes for men, women and children. They have St. John tees and tanks too as well as name brands like Oakley, Kipling, North Face, Naot and Quick Silver just to name a few. There are a ton of fun stores here, like 30 or so and they are unique. www.mongoosejunctionstjohn.com

Wharfside Village

This shopping area couldn’t be any closer to walking from the ferry dock. Its right there as you un-board the ferry to the right. This a very colorful shopping center with brightly color doors and walkways and beautiful shots of the Cruz Bay Harbor. There are bars, restaurants, galleries, tourist shops and water sports companies here. The first shop you will see (and the first to open at 9am) is St. John Spice and St. John Spice too right next door (both are located up the brick stairs). If you need it, they have it. From handmade island souvenirs, beach attire, locally made pottery, grill rubs and the largest selection of hot sauces in the Caribbean, there is something that you will have to have plus they ship your items home if you wish too. (www.stjohnspice.com). Freebird Creations carries eclectic jewelry (lots of it is handmade items from artist from the Caribbean) and watches www.freebirdcreations.com., Shae Designs (handmade jewelry) and Dreams and Dragonflies (clothing, jewelry and artwork) are another two shops that are worth the peek. There are lots of little shops to choose from here. www.wharfsidevillage.com

Coral Bay

This is the "other" town on the island of St. John. It’s the total opposite of busy Cruz Bay. They have a gas station, a couple grocery stores, some great bars and restaurants and funky shops, all of which cater to the tourists and locals too. It’s like stepping back into real island time. When you drive over from Cruz Bay in your rental car, you’ll know you’re in Coral Bay when you get to the spot called The Triangle. If you look left, you will see the historic Moravian Church with bright orange roof. Look right and you’ll see the bus stop, surrounded by signs pointing you the way to go everywhere! Turn right and see shopping at the new Cocoloba complex, and eat at Shipwreck Landing (www.shipwrecklandingstjohn.com) Stay straight at the Triangle and you can shop at Jolly Dog (www.thejollydog.com) or Mumbo Jumbo for souvenirs and check out the work of local artists at Sloop Jones and the Syzygy gallery. The Donkey Diner serves great best breakfast and Miss Vie’s Snack Shack is famous for her fried chicken and Johnnycakes. And don’t forget to stop at Skinny Legs for a snack (www.skinnylegs.com). Cocolobo has a grocery store, a mail center and many shops including Tu Tu Tango where you can find local art. www.coralbaystjohn.com

Provisions: Grocery stores and where to get things

K-mart.

There are two K-marts on the island of St. Thomas. One, smaller one, is located in Lockhart Mall near the Havensight cruise ship dock and the other one is a cab ride into an area called TuTu Park (mall). Both have things like any normal K-mart does such as water, snacks, suntan lotion, books and magazines, bathing suits ect. It’s a great place to go to load up on rum, beach stuff and snacks. Tip: the smaller K-mart in Lockhart sells ground Starbucks but only here and the only place on the island really other than Four Seasons that is substantially higher in price so if you need your starbucks fix, get it at K-mart. Opens at 7am daily and 8am on Sunday’s.

Cost-U-Less.

St. Thomas’ version of Price Club or Sam’s Club in the states. You do not have to have a membership card to shop here! This is where most locals shop for great produce (stateside feel) and meat (big dept.), liquor (big wine and hard liquor selection) and larger quantities of food. If you are here for a while, it would be a good place to start your shopping first. It’s next door to the Home Depot Center and big movie theater. Tip: you need to get your own boxes at the check out counter from the big bin and have them ready for your checker when you check out. They don’t have bags.

Food Center:

Probably the closest grocery store that is stateside looking. Located on your way to Redhook and is easy to find. They have everything you need, a deli counter for sandwiches and local foods, wine ect. Tip: the shopping carts do NOT fit thru the check out area so unload your groceries and leave the cart because believe me, we have all done it, they don’t fit! They have a nice service of baggers that bag your groceries and will take your groceries to your car for you. Feel free to give them a small tip.

Marina Market:

Located in Redhook across from the American yacht Harbor. This is a small little market with about everything you would need and a great meat counter and deli too. They sell a ton of organic foods here so watch the prices on things. This is a perfect little market for getting snack for a day sail or to buy snacks for the ferry over to St. John (right across the street).

Four Seasons:

Just newly opened in Lockhart Mall (next to the small K-mart) near the Havensight cruise ship dock. It sells a ton of organic produce, meats and everything else you could need. Prices are higher here than say Cost-u-less or Food Center but it is very convenient and very clean. Note: it is FREEZING in there so be prepared to freeze for a little while in your shorts and bathing suits.

Gourmet Gallery

Located in Havensight at the cruise ship terminal. A cute little store with everything but the prices are higher than the other stores. They do have a great deli for sandwiches and pastas.

Health Food Store

Across from Havensight Port of Sale (cruise ship dock) and Wendy’s. It is a full service health food store with supplements, pretty large selection of groceries, locally ground peanut butter and honey, books and even a fabulous deli with sandwiches and smoothies.

Driving around St. Thomas island

The cost to rent a car far outweighs the cost of the taxis if you are active and like to go to various beaches, restaurants and explore since taxi’s charge per person. If you are a stay-at-the-hotel and relax kind of person, then maybe not. We drive on the left which isn’t a big deal since we rarely get over 20 miles an hour and the roads are well marked with arrows and the traffic flow. We have no highways to drive fast on. More and more major traffic lights, especially now in front of the Yacht Haven Grande complex by the cruise ship terminal, have been installed for convenience to drivers and make it easy to find your way around. We also have these cute little starfish directional signs (Tommy starfish to be exact) pointing ways to town, the airport, the beaches ect.

Taxi’s- for visitors that don’t like to do their own driving, there is a large taxicab fleet. Look only for the taxis which carry the dome light and the letters TP on their license plates. Other taxis are not officially licensed. Many taxi’s are open-air (like you will see around town) and some are passenger vans (like you will see coming from the airport since they can hold more people). When you arrive at the airport and get into a passenger van, they will make many stops along the way at various hotels so a ride could take longer to get to your hotel vs. an exclusive ride for just yourself which is more. Taxi charges can add up quick because they charge PER PERSON and $2 a bag for luggage.

Water Taxis to St. John, St. Thomas: The boat leaves Redhook’s ferry terminal in St. Thomas each day at 6:30am and 7:30am and then hourly 8am to 7pm, 9pm, 11pm and 12pm. Coming from St. John to St. Thomas the schedule is hourly from 6am to 6pm and then 8pm, 10pm and 11pm. Of course, check to make sure there have been no changes to the boat schedule. The cost is $6.10 one way and children under 12 are $1. Luggage like suitcases and boxes are an extra $2 charge but beach bags, backpacks and purses are excluded. No food or drink on the ferry. It is a 15 minute ride. There is air conditioning below deck and the sun deck up top which is great for taking pictures. There is parking right in front of the terminal on an hourly basis but fills up fast in the morning commute hours but the overflow is across the street at Mencia’s lot. Same price either place. . Local’s tip: buy a round trip ticket right when you get there. Oh and there is a car ferry that goes over to St. John however you are not allowed to take your rental car on it.

There is also a ferry to St. John that leaves from the Charlotte Amalie Harbor and 9am and 5:30pm and Sunday’s at 1pm only. The cost of this ferry is $11.10 each way and $3 for children. There is a $2.50 bag charge for luggage or boxes but beach bags, backpacks and purse are excluded from a charge. This ride is a 45 minute ride. Local’s Tip: make sure when you are at the St. John Ferry going back to St. Thomas that you are on the right ferry. Both ferries run out of St. John. Right as you get off your ferry taxi cabs are there to take you to the beaches.

Note: no passports are needed between St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix and Puerto Rico but if you are going to the British Virgin Islands or Tortola then you will need them or a birth certificate with photo ID.

Scooter rentals.

The main scooter rental place is located across the street from the Havensight cruise ship terminal and there are a few more around the island as well. Lot’s of tourist like to rent scooters and explore their way around the island on their own schedule. Tip: remember that we get rain a lot on the island and have pot holes that frequent our roads, ton’s of taxi’s and locals who like to get to where they are going so if you do rent a scooter, wear your helmet (it’s the law anyway) and pull over if you are lost or moving slow.

Walking

This may sound funny to talk about but town is a further walk from the cruise ship terminal (Havensight) than it looks and if you are a cruise shipper and your ship is docked in Crown Bay, then town is even farther away. If you love to walk a good hike, then by all means, get some exercise but the open-air taxi’s are your best bet and worth the money in our island heat (and sometime unexpected rain). You are on vacation, relax and let someone else drive you around plus, if you buy anything you won’t have to lug it back.

Ferry from Frenchman’s Reef to downtown- this is a small shopping ferry (picture something out of Disney’s Jungle ride) and runs M-Sat departing from the hotel every hour on the half hour, between 8:30-4:30- it departs from the waterfront every hour on the hour, between 9am and 5pm. The Sunday ferry is closed from Jun-Nov. It is a cost of $6 for adults and $4 for kids (3-12), 2 and under are free. It’s a VERY EASY way to get in and out of town on a busy day, take in a few harbor sites and relax. Open to the public, not just for Marriott guests.

Car Rentals

Renting a car is easy. Hertz (www.Hertz.com) and Budget (www.budgetstt.com) are located right at the airport so after you get your luggage you can go right to the counter there (literally 5 steps from the baggage carousel) Of course, call first to reserve your car, children’s car seats ect. before you get here. Local’s Tip: even though you may have called the national Budget or Hertz line to reserve your children’s car seats, be sure to call locally here to also do it. Sometimes the coconut telegram doesn’t work too well and they run out so play it safe and make that extra call.

Seaplane to Puerto Rico or St. Croix:

Seaborne airlines flys from downtown Charlotte Amalie to St. Croix or Puerto Rico daily and many times a day at that. They depart St. Thomas to St. Croix (25 min ride) starting at 6:45 thru 5:15 pretty much every ½ hour and from St. Thomas to Puerto Rico (also 25 min ride) starting at 7am thru 5:15 pretty much every ½ hour or ¼ hour even. For the rates check their website or call 340-773-6442. Rates range from $85-$100 each way. Local’s tip: you MUST be at the airport no later than 45 minute prior to your flight or you will lose your seat and be put on the next flight if they have room. No kidding. They will also ask your weight so they can place you in an even weight distribution so don’t lie. www.seaborneairlines.com

Weather:

Travelers will be comfortable whether they are in casual or formal attire in St. Thomas but we are an island that is comfortable casual so resort wear is fine even in fine dining restaurants. The island is blessed with 85 degree temperature and sun-drenched weather year round, cooled by the soft blowing Trade Winds. Most of the time the weather report says 30% chance of rain which means it may rain for 2 seconds somewhere on the island. Don’t worry about it unless it is say over 40% chance or more, and then you may get some rain for 20 minutes or so. Hurricane season is technically May thru November so this is our rainy season and yes, we do get rain and sometimes lots of it.

Locals have an umbrella in the car or in their beach bag at all times because the rain even comes in 90 degree heat and sun. It’s also handy to block the sun on a long walk here as the sun is hotter than normal. www.weather.com, www.stormvi.com, www.noaa.gov.

Banks:

Cell Phones:

Lot’s of cell phones work here on the island. AT & T, Sprint and Cingular all have local service (as well as service/sales offices) and will allow you to make calls (of course, based on your rate plan). You should check before you come here, with your provider on rates and coverage because roaming rates may or may not incur.

Postal Service:

The US Virgin Islands are a territory of the United States so we use the same postal system and rates as the states. You can buy stamps, boxes and mailing supplies at any post office here. Havensight in St. Thomas has a very convenient post office at the cruise ship mall that is open on days that ships are in (even if it’s a Saturday or Sunday) and regular days too. Tip: you must fill out a green customs form for ANY package over 1 ounce so have that ready to go by the time you get to the window. St. John has their post office right in the heart of town facing the national park dock.

Fed Ex

(at the airport) (www.fedex.com) and UPS (www.ups.com) also have offices here.

Medical needs:

For 24 hour medical needs call Redhook Family Practice at 775-2303 which is the St. Thomas office or 776-6789 for the St. John Office. The St. Thomas hospital phone number is 776-8311 and is located in middle of the island by the main post office. www.redhookfamilypractice.com

And finally but most importantly:

ALWAYS say good morning, good afternoon and good evening BEFORE you ask any question. Everyone here is very friendly and it is expected that you greet them before talking or asking for directions ect. Even when you go into a store, don't be surprised if you see a local come in and say to the whole store, "Good Morning" and have everyone turn around and say good morning back. If you are driving, always beep your horn to say thank you when folks stop and let you go in traffic. You will hear lots of that going on too and it’s the opposite of NY, when someone honks, here it’s a good thing!
