Rock Iguana at the boat yard 3/16/10
We love rock iguanas like we love our dogs and cat. They aren't so cute and cuddly, and I say that we love them when they are hanging out at a distance from our house! This week while boating with our family here on Spring break, this little creepy guy was at the boat yard just hanging out watching us on the sidewalk near our boat. He looks like he is 100 years old (though they can live only about 25 years) and I only know he is old by the color of his skin; dark green is older while bright lime green are younger iguanas. These Rock Iguanas, are also known as “whorl-tailed” iguanas because of the colored rings on their tails, are only found here in the West Indies. How cool is that?
I was sad that I had eaten all the sliced apples while boating and didn't have a snack for him to munch on. We have seen him now a couple of times in the boatyard so maybe I should save at least one piece of fruit just in case I see him again huh? At least they are harmless and only seem to eat veggies and fruit, though they will eat insects, small animals (yikes!) and small lizards too. With that said, once my friend Randy got bit by one in Aruba while feeding an iguana chicken, so I guess they can nip a human if they want to. Ouch! Maybe his finger looked like a piece of chicken? check out this link with pictures of their teeth and what a bite did to someone. Geez! http://homepage.ntlworld.com/steve.woodward/teeth.html
Did you know that Rock Iguanas have been present in the islands for some 12 million years. No wonder they look so creepy and old!
